Set up in 1996 by a group of professional portrait photographers from around the country to raise funds for “Cure Kids” (the face of the Child Health Research Foundation).

Cure Kids (previously Child Health Research Foundation) was established over 30 years ago to address the lack of research into life-threatening childhood illnesses in New Zealand.

Since then, we have invested over $21 million in medical research. This research has helped save hundreds of young lives and has improved the quality of life for thousands of children.

Today, they are more committed than ever to help find answers to the many cruel, life-threatening illnesses that devastate the lives of young children and their families.

About the Photokids Portrait Contest
The 2009 Photokids Portrait Contest has raised $ 7,000 for Cure kids this year and attracted intense interest around the country. Now in its fifteenth year the Photokids Portrait Contest has raised over $320,000 for children’s health research.

The contest which first started in 1996, raises funds for ‘Cure Kids’ the face of the Child Health Research Foundation. The $30 donation supports Cure Kids, who have been conducting life saving research for over 35 years and have helped fund world first breakthroughs in cot death, childhood leukemia, and cystic fibrosis.

Photographer John Cowan who has now photographed six National winners has been involved with this contest and Child Health research since 1986.

The contest is open to boys and girls from birth to nineteen years including siblings. This year there is a Special Family Category with an additional prize of a luxury weekend for the adults of the winning family.

Each participant receives a professional creative portrait session in colour or black and white for a $30 donation to “Cure Kids”. Parents choose the category and the image to enter into the contest. The donation of thirty dollars goes to the Child Health Research Foundations “Cure Kids” for vital medical research which benefits all New Zealand children.

How it works
Parents and caregivers are asked to nominate their child or children for the contest.

When your nomination is accepted you are invited to a pre shoot planning discussion where your ideas and preferences are used to plan the taking session.

Clothing, black and white, sepia and colour, albums, wall portraits, prices, payment plans, styles and framing are all covered and a time to take the portraits that is best for the children is made.

Approximately a week after your taking session we will organize a time to get together to view and select your images. This is the really rewarding part, you get to relive the fun of you photography session and view some fantastic images.

Please allow at lest an hour to view your images and work out what you would like to order.

If you have a partner or parents that are part of the session or are interested in ordering portraits, we can organize a time that is convenient for all.
